EU membership has been pivotal to the development of LGBTI (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Intersex) rights in the UK and across the world.
Since we posted the above graphic all 28 EU member states have reached a consensus on LGBT rights for the first time in European history. In the wake of the Orlando attacks the Council of the EU reached consensus on a Netherlands-backed agreement concerning women’s rights, gender equality and the protection of LGBTI people across the EU. More about this here.
This graphic was inspired by an article by Belinda Dear. Belinda graduated with a degree in French and Spanish from Durham University, and has been campaigning for the UK to Remain in the EU since August with the grassroots organisation Remain Great, Remain In. She is currently doing an internship with the European Commission and is looking for work in LGBTI NGOs such as ILGA-Europe and Stonewall. You can find her original article here.
