Mario Rajoy, Prime Minister of Spain, has spoken out in favour of the UK staying in the EU.
Speaking at a joint news conference in September 2015, Rajoy promised that Spain will “do everything in its power for things to go well”.
“It would be unthinkable and a step backwards, that I don’t want to even think about, if the United Kingdom were not in the EU.”

There are thought to be between 300,000 and 700,000 British expats living longterm in Spain. They are able to claim pensions and benefits thanks to EU free movement rules. It is unclear what would happen to British expats if the UK voted to leave the EU as this would depend on the outcome of future negotiations with the EU.
