German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said that Germany “will do what we can so that Britain can stay”.

Speaking in November ahead of an address by George Osborne, Merkel continued:

“I agree that the UK should remain a member of the European Union But, of course, the decision isn’t up to us, it is up to the British.

“We can say that where there are justified concerns — whether competitiveness or better functioning of the EU, the British concerns are our concerns.”
